"The Maggie’s fundraising Valentine’s Ball "
Saturday 11th February 2023
Online Exclusive Auction Items starts at 11pm
Welcome!
Thank you all for being here to support our fundraising evening for the Maggie’s Centre in
Aberdeen, It will be five years since we last staged this event and I’m pleased to say we
have a complete sell out this evening. I do hope we can deliver a hugely successful and
entertaining night for you all, but in particular for Maggie’s. I am extremely grateful to the
ANM Group for their vital support, together with that of Scotbeef and Strachans as our
three main sponsors for tonight. I also want to put on record my thanks to my dear friend
and compere for tonight; Robert Lovie, who together with Raemond Jappy and Kevin
Macdonald from the Red-hot Chilli Pipers will provide our entertainment this evening. Also
a big thank you to Harry Fraser and his team for catering our dinner which showcases the
very best produce of the North East of Scotland. Finally to the auctioneers for tonight; Colin
Slessor and Alan Hutcheon, a massive thank you for agreeing to do the auctions.
We are very fortunate to have a Maggie’s Centre in Aberdeen and it plays a key role in
supporting cancer patients in the North East. Sadly, cancer is a huge challenge for the
medical profession and despite advances in treatments; the hurt and despair it causes to
so many individuals, their families and friends, can be devastating.
Maggie’s plays a key role during these traumatic times on so
many levels, in particular coming to terms with what is a new
reality and how best to step forward and find paths to best
deal or cope with it.
Maggie’s also provides a safe haven with professionals trained to help you. It also provides
time and space for reflection and quiet moments, as the building in Aberdeen has quiet
corners to accommodate those moments. Maggie’s is dependent on donations to keep it
going and that is why we are here tonight to help it continue its great work. I’m sure every one
of you here tonight will be touched in some way with this dreadful disease at some point if not
already, whether personally or through a loved one. Please dig deep for a great cause.
This sort of event does not just happen and I am fortunate to have a great committee who
have assisted me to make tonight what it is. They are Avril McLeod, Claire Machray, Nicola
Brice, Mike Macaulay, Stanley Morrice, Colin Crombie, Ian Ord, Richard Stewart, Philip
Benzie and Dave Green. I am thankful to so many people for stepping forward without
hesitation with auction lots, raffle prizes and food, you have all been fantastic and generous.
There are too many people to mention individually here, however, you will find all of our
supporters recognised within this brochure.
Please enjoy your night but please also do your utmost to support Maggie’s with your
own generosity.
Thank you, Pat Machray OBE.

Exclusive auction items
We are honoured to have three exceptional artworks by three exceptional artists to auction this evening. We
are extraordinarily fortunate to have the support of Iain Faulkner, David Meredith and Glen Scouller. These
artists exhibit in some of the finest galleries and are in high demand by collectors across the world.
Gallery prices for paintings by Iain and Glen exceed £20,000 and at auction their work has seen the hammer
to drop on prices above £40,000.
The red deer stag and hind we have at our auction tonight are very rare bronzes, full size one-offs (i.e. not
limited editions) and they are signed. The gallery price would be circa £85,000/£90,000 as a pair but due to
their rarity they could achieve considerably more. We cannot emphasise the rarity of these bronzes enough.
There are reserve prices in place for each of these lots, yet that still offers the opportunity to walk away with a
highly collectible piece at a very attractive price.
Glen Scouller - Low tide, St Monans
Oil on canvas - 56" x 60", 142.2 x 152.4cm
Glen Scouller RSW RGI is a contemporary Scottish
artist living in Ayrshire. His passion is for colour and
light with a strong bold approach to his subject matter,
which includes landscape, still life and the human figure.
Scouller’s work is based on direct observation from
nature, painting en plein air and developing larger works
in the studio. Elected a member of The Royal Scottish
Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW) in 1997 and
The Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts (RGI) in 1989,
he has also won many awards for his work in both oil and
watercolour and is included in numerous corporate and
public collections worldwide including The South African
Government, The Scottish Government, De Beers and
The Royal Bank of Scotland.
One of the highest profile artists in the country, Scouller
has had successful shows at the Portland Gallery in
London, Open Eye Edinburgh, The Roger Billcliffe Gallery
in Glasgow and The Everard Read Gallery in Cape Town
and Johannesburg.
Iain Faulkner - Morning sun, Loch Eck
36" x 36"
Iain Faulkner is a Scottish artist who has been exhibiting internationally for the
last 20 years and is considered one of the biggest stars from the graduates of
Glasgow School of Art. Represented by the Pontone Gallery, formerly Albemarle
Gallery, London, Iain has exhibited regularly in London and New York with other
shows in Paris, Milan and Geneva among others.
His work is held in many public, corporate and private collections, including
The Scottish National Portrait Gallery where his portrait of Colin Montgomerie
is on permanent display.
The painting for our auction tonight has been specially commissioned for this
occasion. It is entitled ‘Morning Sun, Loch Eck’, a beautiful stretch of water on the
Cowal Peninsula.
David Meredith - Red Deer
Bronze - Height 150cm x 200cm width/life-size
Over a 30 year career David Meredith has become one of finest
sculptors in the UK.
Wildlife is his passion and that can be seen in his body of work, his ability
to bring life and crucially movement to his creations is his hallmark. Each
piece can take up to six months to complete.
David lives in Norfolk and his work is displayed in galleries across
Britain and the USA and it can be found on public display and in private
collections across the world. His work is regularly included in display
gardens at the world famous Chelsea Flower Show.
His sculptures are both works of art and engineering, he tries to
minimise the base required so that the animals appear to be moving
almost floating across their landscape. The red deer stag and hind we
have at our auction tonight are among David’s largest and finest pieces
and should, as he says, be displayed as a pair. Whether at the entrance
of a cherished home, business or popping out of the trees or driveway
of a beautiful garden, these important pieces will be cherished for
generations. All pieces will be delivered to your home or office .
Special thanks to David Reid at Ballater Gallery
for curating our exclusive art auction.
